Focus Area: Reading for Pleasure

Using miMove to support a whole school literacy drive

Purpose

To increase the number of students who choose to read regularly for enjoyment, while building a whole-school culture where all forms of reading are valued. This focus recognises that reading looks different for different learners and removes barriers that can prevent some students from feeling successful.

Who it’s for

  • All students, across all year groups

  • Particularly supportive of:

    • Reluctant readers

    • Students with additional learning needs

    • Students with low confidence in reading

    • Students who engage better with audio, visual or supported texts

This is a universal approach with targeted insight, not a one-size-fits-all expectation.

Suggested duration

6-8 weeks
(Short enough to maintain momentum, long enough to establish habits and see meaningful change.)

What success looks like

  • More students recording reading activity on miMove
  • Increased consistency of reading over time, not just one-off entries
  • A reduction in gaps between different groups of students
  • Students reporting greater confidence and enjoyment in reading
  • Staff feeling confident that every student’s effort counts, regardless of starting point

How miMove supports it

  • Students record reading in ways that suit them:

    • Physical books

    • E-books

    • Audiobooks

    • Supported or shared reading

  • All reading activity is validated equally, reinforcing inclusion and belonging

  • Staff can monitor:

    • Overall participation trends

    • Engagement by year group or cohort

    • Gaps between groups (e.g. gender, additional needs, attendance patterns)

All staff should know that they can see what a student is currently reading on screen Activities . Filter by class or group OR search student name > Click into the student activity record...

  • Badges and progress indicators provide motivation without pressure

  • Messaging and challenges can be framed around habit-building, not performance

miMove makes reading visible, without turning it into a test.

Evidence you’ll have at the end

  • Clear data showing changes in reading participation across the school

  • Insight into which groups have increased engagement - and which may need further support

  • A record of sustained reading habits, not just compliance

  • Robust evidence to support:

    • Inspection conversations

    • Whole-school development planning

    • Inclusion and wellbeing priorities

  • A strong foundation to build future literacy and enrichment work
