Focus Area: Active Travel

Encouraging students to travel to and from school without using cars or public transport

Purpose

This Focus Area aligns to schools that are working towards being carbon neutral and/or encouraging active travel.
NB Safety first - there may be very good reasons not to encourage this focus area.

This can be organised as a class or individual compeition or challenge.

Who it’s for

All students

Suggested duration

4-6 weeks

What success looks like

  • More students traveling to school by foot, bike, scooter or skateboard
  • Recognise and celebrate reduced use of cars and public transport (ie leaving the car at home twice a week or walking some of the way) as well as those who always use Active Travel to get to and from school.

How miMove supports it

Make sure the students use the Active Travel drop down found in Sport and Physical Activity category rather than Walking or Cycling

If your school runs a combined competition over the course of a year whereby classes or houses collect points for each event/competition to see the overall winner, think about using miMove Active Travel data as another contributing competition. This tends to shift the emphasis as it a great way to genuinely value everybody's contribution.

Evidence you’ll have at the end

  • Additional minutes of physical activity
  • Estimated reduction in CO2
  • Benchmark data to motivate students to 'beat' the next time you run the Focus Area.
